How To Review NCLEX Lab Values

Memorizing long lists of values can feel daunting. Here are practical NCLEX lab value tips to make studying easier and more effective.

1. Learn in Clusters
Group values by system (renal, cardiac, hematologic, etc.). For example:

Renal values: BUN, Creatinine, GFR

Cardiac values: Potassium, Calcium, Troponin

Liver function: AST, ALT, Bilirubin

This way of organizing helps you to see how values go together and makes the NCLEX lab study more sensible.

2. Apply Mnemonics
Mnemonics assist in locking values into memory. Here are a few:

“3 to 5 bananas in a bunch” → Potassium: 3.5–5.0 mEq/L

“Little Maggie is 1.5 to 2.5 years old” → Magnesium: 1.5–2.5 mEq/L

“Calcium = 8.5–10.5” → Imagine 8.5–10.5 fingers holding a milk glass (milk = calcium)
