OET Writing: Structuring a Perfect Referral Letter

Introduction

The introduction defines the entire letter. It should specify the reason and relevant information about the patient.

Example:

“I am writing to refer Mr. John Smith, a 67-year-old male, who has been experiencing severe chest pain and shortness of breath. Immediate cardiological evaluation is requested.”

Essential Tips:

• Make the introduction as short as possible.
• Mention the name, age, and reason for referring the patient.

Body of the Letter 

This is the core of the letter where you expand on the patient’s condition.

• First Paragraph: Relevant medical history and background

Example: “Mr. Smith has a history of hypertension and was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes five years ago. He has been on antihypertensive and antidiabetic medications.”

• Second Paragraph: Highlight the current condition or diagnosis.

Example: “He presented with chest pain radiating to the left arm, accompanied by profuse sweating. Initial ECG results are indicative of ischemic changes.”

• Third Paragraph:This paragraph should present concrete recommendations regarding further action to be taken.

Example: “I recommend coronary angiogram, with immediate referral to a specialist for              exclusion of acute coronary syndrome.”

Conclusion and Closing

The letter ends with the politeness expressed in the summary of the referral along with gratitude

Example:

“Thank you for your attention to this matter. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need further details.”
