TestDaF vs Goethe vs DSH: Which German Exam is Right for You?

TestDaF: Organized in four sections—reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression, and spoken expression. It goes from TDN 3 to TDN 5, with the majority of universities requiring TDN 4. The exam is moderately challenging and highly academically oriented.

 Goethe: Organized in line with CEFR levels (A1–C2). Lower levels can be managed for daily communication, and C1 and C2 are challenging, requiring high-level academic and professional competence. Because you have the option of choosing your level, Goethe tests are more flexible.

 DSH: Structurally similar to TestDaF, with reading, listening, writing, and speaking components. Difficulty is rated a touch greater than TestDaF since it is directed at academic German. It is rated as DSH-1, DSH-2, and DSH-3, and DSH-2 typically serves as the minimum for entry to university.

If your top priority is getting into university, TestDaF and DSH are both accepted by the vast majority of German universities. TestDaF is easier because you can take it in your home country, whereas DSH means you have to already be in Germany. Goethe C1 or C2 may be accepted in some schools, but it’s less likely to be a demand than TestDaF or DSH.
